I'm not talking about my waistline, people. It's a green plant! I love indoor plants, I don't have the best track record at keeping them alive. Perhaps my lack of watering them regularly is to blame? Although in college, I even killed a cactus. Maybe I over-watered it. Who knows?
Our last indoor plant was about nine feet tall and was in a large pot that sat on the floor. It came from the Ohio National insurance office where Jason worked during college. After living at that office for who-knows-how-long, the plant lasted about 12 years, five house moves and one re-potting under our care before one of my sweet little felines decided to use it as a litter box. Apparently Mr. Tall Plant did not appreciate that.
My favorite indoor potted plant ever was a coleus I started from a snipping during my first week of college. It was part of a get-to-know-your-fellow-dorm-students activity. I had never heard of coleus before, but fell in love right away with their beautiful leaves.
My dear roommate Sarah accidentally knocked the clay pot off my desk and it shattered. Since I was in a dorm, I didn't have access to another pot, so I just dumped the plant and moved on. It was a sad day. (I'm pretty sure Sarah knows I was a bit mad at her for a while. Yes, over a plant. I'm uptight like that.)
In warmer climates coleus can live outside year round, but not in the Midwest. If it wasn't harmed by the cold weather, I'd have it all over my landscape beds. I'm to lazy for annuals. Someday when I get around to planting some containers for my porch, I'll put several varieties of coleus in them.
For now, I decided to grow a plant inside. When I was at the garden center purchasing culinary plants (see my last post for more details), I purchased a coleus and a nice pot for it. Today while my hands were dirty from my other planting duties, I got the nestled my pretty little coleus into its new home.
Hopefully I'll have better luck this time around.
